Lets start this prostitution in Costa Rica post with something a bit light hearted. Did you know the prostitution in Costa Rica is legal, but the pimping of prostitutes is not? Seems ironic doesn’t it? Even more ironic is that escort services are also legal. I guess escort services in Costa Rica really do translate into legal pimping services.
Where to Find Prostitutes
As with any country, there are a number of popular destinations if you feel like indulging in some sexual recreation. Your best bets for finding “quality” prostitutes are to visit the major tourist destinations. If you are too uncomfortable to ask where the prostitutes hang out, just visit a few bars or clubs and look for the one that has the hottest girls. The place with all the hot girls is usually the prostitute hot spot of that city.
If our search still proves to be a challenge, there are a few types of businesses that are know places of prostitution. These business types include:
About the Ladies
These ladies have said “damn the man” in the literal sense of the word. Prostitutes, or “sex workers” as they are sometimes called, work for themselves. Many women work as prostitutes to earn a better income than they would working a 9-5 job. Most women only work a few nights out of the month. This usually earns them enough to support themselves or family for an entire month.
Women come to Costa Rica from nearby countries such as Columbia, Nicaragua, Argentina, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. There are of course an abundance of local Costa Rican Women as well.
No matter what your taste in women is, you can probably find one to suit your fancy. Many women from the South American countries are known throughout the world as being the picture perfect Latin American stereo type. From busty blonde’s to petite brunettes, there is a little bit of everything here.
Many of the prostitutes in Costa Rica don’t speak much English, if any. The ones that do will charge top dollar because they can.h So, if you want the most for your money, brush up on your Spanish. Even if its just a little, it will go a long way.
The Legalities
As mentioned before, prostitution is perfectly legal in Costa Rica. It is the act of pimping that is illegal. Aside from the pimp factor, the only major law enforced when it comes to prostitution is sex with minors. Costa Rica has recently created many new laws to eliminate sex with minors and punish those who break this law.
Although it is rare to find an underage prostitute, if you do, you are better off moving on to another chica. Many “professionals” will carry around some sort of ID to prove their age, so feel free to ask to see this if you are concerned.
Cost of Prostitutes
As with any product, you get what you pay for. The average Costa Rican prostitute that you can find in bars or clubs will probably cost around US$50 for quick lay. Higher class prostitutes, stippers, or those from upscale clubs can easily cost upwards of US$150. If you are feeling lucky, you can always test fate by going after a a girl on the street. These streetwalker girls are usually only US$20 - $30.
There is no shortage of corrupt police offers in Costa Rica, thats for sure. Many police offers will target tourist strictly for a bribe, or because they have nothing better to do. I am being completely honest here. Police here tend to be a little more forgiving with their country men because they know most of them cant afford such tickets or cant afford to offer a bribe. Since tourists are the main target of the polices boredom, that leaves one to wonder what they can do about it.

If you are looking for pure Costa Rican luxury, look no further than the Peace Lodge at La Paz Waterfall Gardens. This breathtakingly, beautiful resort is located just one hour North of San Jose. The resort includes everything you imagine when you think of Costa Rica. From waterfalls, to picture perfect views of the rain forest, it can all be found on the resort’s property.
What was once a tiny and secluded beach where people went to watch turtles nest has become a well to do suburbia of expats from all around the world. Much has changed about the beach town of Playa Tamarindo, but the beautiful beaches that made it so popular years ago are still drawing in the crowds today. Thanks to new airports, bridges, and roads, Playa Tamarindo is becoming one of the most popular up and coming destinations in Costa Rica.
Arenal Waterfall - La Fortuna

Just outside the city of La Fortuna is the Arenal Waterfall Park. A visit to the Arenal Waterfall Park is a great way to spend the day in the La Fortuna area. Many visitors spend the first half of the day at the Arenal Waterfall Park, then make their way to Tabacon Hot Springs to relax, and finish off the day with volcano watching. This is a full days worth of activities, but the Arenal Waterfall Park alone is still a great half days worth of adventure travel.
If you are visiting Costa Rica, odds are you will be flying into the capital city of San Jose. Many people simply stay in San Jose because they have to, not because they want to. However, if you plan to go anywhere in Costa Rica, you will have to make your way to San Jose. San Jose is the central hub for transportation in the country.
Because of this, many travelers use San Jose as a layover city or as base camp of sorts. Its takes between 3 to 5 hours to get anywhere in Costa Rica from San Jose. This makes it hard to cross the country in a single day. Thus, forcing many travelers to spend the night in San Jose and catch a bus or plane in the morning.
