Making International Calls

Maybe Im just a sheltered American, but until the first time I visited Costa Rica, I had never made an international call. Needless to say, I was baffled by the combination of country codes, area codes, and the pay phones in general in Costa Rica. To make the entire situation even more complicated, standard calling cards wont work in Costa Rica.

Another option is an international cell phones.

Exchanging money in Costa Rica isn’t a hard thing to do, but many travelers are unsure of how they should exchange money when they first enter the country. You have a number of choices; you could use the money exchange service at your departing airport or in the Costa Rica airport, you could wait and exchange money at the bank, carry travelers checks, or any other number of options. the question is, which is best?

If you are looking for a fun way to spend your day, but don’t have much money to spend, I recommend taking a bike ride down to Manzanillo. For about $20 US you can rent a bike and have a picnic on a secluded beach.

How to Get Out of the Airport

If you have never been to Costa Rica, or any other second/third world country, you might be in for a surprise when you walk out of the airport. Don’t expect loads of people picking up their friends or loved ones. Instead, be prepared to be bombarded by cabbies, bus drives, homeless people, and the occasional drug dealer.

If you are unprepared for this it’s easy to not only be scared, but get taken advantage of. There are a few things you can do to make sure you get your money’s worth and get to your destination safely.

Cliff Jumping in Puerto Viejo

There’s a great little “island” to jump off of in Puerto Viejo. It’s probably the most fun thing to do there, and also the least known. We had done it three times in one week, and when we took the owner of Rocking J’s out with us, it was his first time. I think we started a trend.
